What are tooth veneers?

Tooth veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are designed to cover the front surface of your teeth. They are commonly used to improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, worn down, chipped, or misaligned. Veneers can also be used to close gaps between teeth or make them appear more symmetrical.

There are two main types of veneers: porcelain and composite.

Porcelain veneers are made of a thin layer of porcelain that is custom-made to fit over the front surface of your teeth. They are highly durable and resistant to staining, making them a popular choice for those seeking a long-lasting solution.

Composite veneers, on the other hand, are made of a tooth-colored resin material that is applied directly to the teeth and shaped to create the desired appearance. They are generally less expensive than porcelain veneers, but also tend to be less durable.

We offer both types of veneers and will work with you to determine the best option for your individual needs, budget and smile goals.

How long do veneers last on teeth?

Veneers are designed to be a long-lasting cosmetic solution for improving the appearance of your smile.

With proper care and maintenance, porcelain veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, while composite veneers typically last between 5 to 7 years.

However, the lifespan of your veneers can depend on a number of factors, including:

  • Oral hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is important for the longevity of your veneers. Brushing and flossing regularly and visiting your dentist for regular check-ups and hygiene appointments can help ensure that your veneers stay in good condition.
  • Teeth grinding and clenching: If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, this can put additional stress on your veneers and potentially cause them to chip or crack. Wearing a night guard can help protect your veneers from damage.
  • Diet: Certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, and red wine, can cause staining on your veneers over time. Limiting your consumption of these items can help keep your veneers looking their best.

After treatment is complete, we will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your veneers. By following these guidelines and maintaining good oral hygiene, you can help ensure that your veneers last as long as possible.

If you are serious about your oral hygiene, we recommend joining our practice maintenance plan. Not only will you receive discounts on selected cosmetic treatments, but you will also get free hygiene appointments and regular check-ups scheduled in advance so you don’t end up waiting months for an appointment.

The benefits of veneers

Getting veneers can have a number of benefits for both the appearance and function of your teeth. Some of the main benefits of veneers include:

  • Improved aesthetic appearance
  • Improve confidence and self-esteem
  • Strengthen weak teeth
  • Prevent further damage from occurring to already damaged teeth
  • Correct minor misalignment issues
  • Fill in gaps between teeth
  • Cover up cracks, chips and discolouration
  • Create a more even and uniform smile without the need for braces or other orthodontic treatments.

Veneers can be an excellent cosmetic solution for improving the overall appearance and strength of your teeth. However, if you are eager to treat more serious dental issues, such as sever misalignment or replacing badly damaged teeth, veneers might not be the best option for you.

Instead, you may be more suited to Invisalign treatment for misaligned teeth, or dental implants for replacing damaged teeth.

How much do tooth veneers cost in the UK?

The cost of getting veneers in the UK will vary depending on the type of veneers being used and the number of teeth being treated. On average, the cost of veneers can range from £400 to £1,200 per tooth.

Porcelain veneers tend to be more expensive than composite veneers, as they are more durable and typically last longer. Additionally, if you are getting veneers for multiple teeth, the cost per tooth may be lower than if you are only getting one or two veneers.

At Macaulay Dental Practice, we understand that the cost of cosmetic dental treatments can be a concern for our patients. That's why we offer a range of payment options to make veneers more affordable.

If you're interested in getting veneers and would like to learn more about the cost and available payment options, please contact us to schedule an initial consultation. We'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions and help you determine the best course of treatment for your individual needs!

Are veneers available on the NHS?

In general, cosmetic dental treatments such as veneers are not covered by the NHS. This is because the NHS is designed to provide dental treatment for clinical purposes rather than cosmetic purposes.

However, there may be some cases where veneers are considered medically necessary, such as when they are needed to repair teeth that have been damaged due to trauma or decay. In these cases, veneers may be covered by the NHS.

If you feel like you may qualify for veneers on the NHS, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our friendly team and we can provide an initial assessment to check if veneers are right for you, and if you qualify for veneers on the NHS.
