Dental Implants for Replacing Missing Teeth

Dental implants are a popular and permanent solution for replacing missing or lost teeth. Once placed into the mouth, implants look and function just like natural teeth. They also help to preserve the integrity of the jawbone and surrounding teeth and are extremely durable and long-lasting.

Unlike dentures, dental implants are not removable. The implant is inserted directly into the jaw bone to act as a natural tooth root, giving a solid base for the replacement tooth to be fitted on top.

Once your mouth and jaw have fully healed from implant surgery and the replacement tooth has been secured, you will be able to eat, chew, speak and smile with confidence once again. The implant will quickly feel just like another one of your natural teeth and you should not notice any difference in strength, comfort or functionality between your new implant and your existing teeth.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant consists of two main parts:

  1. The implant itself, which is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as a replacement tooth root.
  2. A dental prosthetic, i.e., replacement tooth, which can come in the form of a crown, bridge, cap or denture, is then attached to the titanium implant to complete the tooth restoration.

Together, the implant and the replacement tooth create a strong, durable, long-lasting solution that looks and functions just like your natural teeth.

Who are dental implants for?

Dental implants are a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth, making them ideal for patients who have suffered tooth loss of any kind.

Some common reasons for choosing dental implants are:

  • You have suffered tooth loss through accidental injury
  • Lost teeth due to poor oral health
  • Damaged, cracked or broken teeth through severe dental trauma
  • Lost teeth due to tooth removal or extraction

Whilst dental implants are a fantastic solution for missing teeth, they are not suitable for everyone. Due to the nature of the surgery, it’s essential to have a strong and healthy jaw bone to ensure the implant can be inserted safely and correctly.

If you are found to have a weak or brittle jaw bone, you may not qualify for dental implants or you may need to have a bone graft before the surgery can take place.

Your implant dentist at Macaulay Dental Practice will properly assess your mouth and jaw bone before any implant work is carried out.

The procedure for dental implants at Macaulay Dental Practice

The procedure for dental implants involves invasive surgery and is usually split into two main parts:

  1. The insertion of the titanium implant directly into the jaw bone
  2. The placement of the abutment or tooth cap on top of the implant

At Macaulay Dental Practice we offer an effective and efficient process for placing dental implants.

Our implant procedure typically involves the following steps:

Consultation

The first step is to schedule an implant consultation with one of our dentists. They will examine your mouth and take X-rays to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.

Treatment planning

Your implant dentist will then use the information gathered during the consultation to plan the placement of the implants. They will also discuss all of your available options, answer all of your questions and help you to choose the best option for your personal needs, wants and situation.

Implant surgery

The surgical procedure to place the implant(s) is typically performed under local anesthesia. A small incision will be made in the gums so as to insert the implant(s) into the jawbone.

Healing period

After the initial implant surgery, the implant(s) will need some time to heal and fuse with the jawbone. This process, called osseointegration, typically takes several months. We will provide you with a temporary tooth cap during the healing period so you are not left with an unsightly gap in your smile.

Placement of the replacement tooth

Once the implant(s) have fused with the jawbone, we will place an abutment, which is a small connector piece, on the implant(s). An impression will be taken of the abutment and a tooth restoration, such as a crown or bridge, will be constructed in a dental lab before being placed on the abutment(s) to create a sturdy and natural-looking replacement tooth.

Aftercare

After the procedure, it is important to take care of the implant(s) by maintaining good oral hygiene and visiting the dentist regularly.

How long do dental implants last?

With good oral health and proper aftercare, dental implants can last for up to a lifetime.

However, their lifespan will vary depending on a number of factors, including the quality of the implant and the patient's oral hygiene.

On average, dental implants last for over 20 years with proper care and maintenance, although some patients may need to have their implant replaced or repaired sooner. Generally, the replacement tooth will need to be replaced every 5-10 years, whilst the titanium implant itself will remain strong and durable due it fusing directly with the jaw bone.

We strongly recommend attending regular dental check-ups to ensure the health and longevity of your implant.

The cost of dental implants in the UK

On average, the cost for a single dental implant in the UK can range from £2000 -£3000, however, dental implant treatment costs can vary depending on a few important factors, such as:

  • The type of implant used
  • The number of implants needed
  • Pre-implant work, such as x-rays, bone grafts or dental hygiene work
  • The location of the dental clinic

Here at Macaulay Dental Practice, we understand that the cost of dental implants can be a concern. In addition, the thought of invasive surgery can out many patients off dental implants.

However, we want to assure you investing in dental implants is well worth it for the many benefits they provide. Not only are dental implants a permanent solution to replacing missing teeth, but they also look and feel completely natural. Additionally, dental implants can prevent bone loss and preserve the shape of the face.
